But we didn't go to Camarillo! Due to an arriving front with ceilings
progressively lower toward the NW, (4500 over LAX and 3800 over CMA),
we cancelled Camarillo and considered the alternate... Yucca Valley.
However a phone call to Carrow's restaurant in Yucca Valley revealed that the restaurant was over 1/2 mile from the airport and a 20+" walk, rather than the 1/4 mile and 10" walk advertised in the AOPA book. So we decided to fly to Chiriaco Summit with a restaurant close by.
As usual, the "slow guys" took off from Montgomery first and the "fast guys" later. At Chiriaco, Dennis, Larry and Bill did a nice looking three-plane low "fly-by" over the runway.
After breakfast and lots of "hangar flying" we took a group picture by the Chiriaco airport sign, just so we'd know where we were. The pics are on the web and Chris will plug in the appropriate names soon.
We didn't go into Gen Patton's Museum this time, but did look over a couple WWII planes in the tiedown area that were recently brought in by a group from Apple Valley. It will compliment the Museum nicely.
Chris and Bill took so many pictures of the Vari-Ezes, that Chris said he'll call it the Bill & Larry show. Again, neat pictures of the Vari-Ezes which are on the web.
Returning to San Diego we encountered some scattered clouds with a
4000' overcast coming in behind them. A visual reminder that we made a
good decision by not going NW to Camarillo. We'll probably do Camarillo
in another couple months.
NEXT FLY-IN: Sun, Mar 18th to CALEXICO (CXL) where the airport food is good, but the service isn't. Or we can all pile into a taxi for a buck each and go to town (1-2 miles) for breakfast/brunch at the Calexico's biggest hotel for good Mexican (what else) food.
