Subject: CATALINA FLY IN UPDATE #3
Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 10:19:31 -0700
Hi Guys,
The Catalina (AVX) Fly-In on Sun, Oct 12, turned out to be a pretty nice
day. After a week of low ceilings and scuzzy visibilities up and down the
coast, no one expected the weather to break. Consequently three of the six
planes cancelled a few days early because of the pessimistic forecast. But
Old Mother Nature came through for us.
The three planes that made it were: Robert Werve and his friend George in
a Skymaster 337 flying from SEE, Dennis Cullum in an RV3 flying out of SDM,
and Bret Strain and me in a 172 flew from MYF.
MYF was clear with 4 miles vis, but it cleared considerably along the
coast and AVX's AWOS called it 10 mile vis. We all landed about 15 minutes
of each other and had brunch at the restaurant known for Buffalo Burgers. As
usual, over brunch we
and solved California's political mess, and most of the world's problems,
and picked out a place for the November Fly-In.
Before departing Bret got a couple pictures of the group munching brunch
at the patio table overlooking the pasture where the buffalo graze. Then of
course we had to get a picture of us around a "Buffalo". Chris Claborne will
be posting the pictures on the website shortly.
There wasn't many of us this time, but we had a good time and thoroughly
enjoyed a relaxing, sunny morning in the open-air setting before heading
back home around noon time.
Next Fly-In is on Sunday, Nov 23 and our destination will be Hesperia
(L26). As Dennis said, "We should stop there and give them some business."
He's right! From what I remembered, this is a sleepy little airport, with a
sleepier restaurant named "Barnstormer", and they do need the business. It's
just north of Lake Arrowhead and before Apple Valley. If we get 4-5 planes
to land there on the same day, they'll really appreciate it and think
they've got their own little Oshkosh taking place. And of course the
important thing is, it's a great way to keep many of our small airports
active and alive, besides just having a fun, mini-Fly-In to a friendly
airport..
Mark your calendars NOW for Sun, Nov 23 and schedule your favorite plane .
It's a short hop and we'll be back home around 1 o'clock.
Due to the hussle and bussle getting ready for Christmas and New Years
Eve/Day, we may consider not having a Fly-In in December.
Best of clear skies and tailwinds,
Tony Tex
