Hi Guys,
This Sunday, Feb 15, is our Fly-In to Mohave (MHV). We'll try out the
new
Voyage Restaurant there. Also I'm going to arrange for a tour of the airport
by van (as Jeff did below). So let me know if you're coming on this one so I
can get a rough head count for reserving the van..
Here's some info from Jeff Cary on the flight he took to MHV and the
airport van tour he took there.
On Monday December 23, 2002 my brother in law and I flew up to the
Mojave
Airport in a C-172 from MYF, the round trip time was 3.8 / Hrs. We used the
inland route to Pomona then we turned west to take the Gorman Pass. We
wanted to make a quick stop at Rosemond Airport for lunch but they were
closed. Leaving Rosamond we followed the freeway north until Mojave came
into sight, those runways are easy to spot they are HUGE. Parking in front
of the main terminal where the old tower is located, we went into the
mangers office to arrange for a tour. The airport owns a white Ford van
that's big enough to hold 8 people. The charge was $5.00 per person for the
tour, and the driver knew all about the airport and projects going on. One
of the business on the airport has several airliner fuselages set-up for
fire fighter and police training. The tour included a drive thru the
mothball fleet of airliners, and the scrap yard. As we were departing my
brother in law noticed we were the only normal plane moving about, there was
two Long-Ezs, a very strange looking European jet, and a old F-4 Phantom
acting as a chase plane. Circling the pattern was a NASA Hornet that had
been modified to use wing warping for its directional control. 20 mins later
we overheard the F-4's pilot make a distress call to the tower when his
landing gear failed to retract. We flew direct from there to French Valley
airport for lunch, because at the time the Mojave Airport didn't have a
restaurant with-in walking distance. The Mojave Airport web-site currently
lists a new restaurant we should try...the main terminal has a small pilot
store with some historical information, and the usual stuff for sale. I
have 734BT reserved and Jerry Jackson and I will be making the trip
Check our website and MHV's website below.
