Hi Guys,
Good Fly-In to L22 today! Even though the morning marine layer grounded
two planes at CRQ and SDM airports, four planes and nine people made the
Fly-In. Fortunately one plane had two empty seats and it took two non-IFR
pilots who weren't going to fly due to weather. I called the restaurant at
L22 and they said they'd be ready for us.
Flying out of SEE were Doc Kennedy, Bob Werve, Jeff Cary & Jerry Jackson
in a C-337, and in an Arrow Gary Ghio flew alone.
Flying out of MYF were Andy Silver & Mike Gretton in a Comanche and in a
C-337 were Jim Newport and me.
The morning marine layer was initially low and dense. At MYF the ceiling
was 100' with 1/4 mile vis with tops at 2600. We decided to wait until it
got to 200' and 1 mile (our minimums for getting back in after take off).
However, by 0930 it started breaking up fast and was almost VFR by the time
we left. At SEE it burned off even faster.
To the east near the foothills the weather was severe clear with smooth
air all the way to L22. It was a beautiful and enjoyable day and a fun
flight over the hills and out to the desert.
At L22, Mike, a friendly pilot based there (you find many of these pilots
at small airports) gave us a ride to Manny's Restaurant which was about 5-6
blocks from the airport. Manny's is erroneously called Pete's in your flight
guide. Mike laughed and told us the name change was because Pete had bad
food and Manny wanted to avoid the reputation. He was joking. We found the
breakfast at Manny's pretty decent even though Manny was one of the original
owners. The name change was due to one partner buying out another. I know...
you've been waiting years to hear about this ownership change.
Anyway, when I got there a couple long tables were already put together.
We had a good time doing our usual "hangar flying" over breakfast, solving
the world problems (from our perspective), discussing the most important
issues (flying) and talked about next month's Fly-In.
Nearly everyone there said they have commitments during most of the
weekends in April, i.e., visitors, relatives, Easter, etc. So THERE IS NO
FLY-IN NEXT MONTH.
Around 1230, everyone scattered on their various routes to San Diego. By
then the weather was clear below 12,000 with 4 mile vis in the San Diego
area. We encountered a little lumpy air coming through the pass south of
PSP, but other than that it was a great flight.
Again, I believe everyone had a fun flying day and a great time today with
fellow aviators.
The NEXT FLY-IN will be on MAY 16th to HARRIS RANCH (3O8). That's "Three,
Zero, Eight". I'll email you the 1st and 2nd week of May and get another
head count for the restaurant up there and include what ever additional info
is available for that area.
Best of clear skies and tailwinds,
