Subject: OCT FLY-IN UPDATE #1
Hi Guys,
Four planes and seven people did made the Oct Fly-In to Apple Valley (APV) on Sun, Oct 24.
Mike Gretton came screaming out of SEE in his Lancair. Jeff Cary & Jerry Jackson had some bad luck and couldn't get a 172 started at SEE, grounded the plane and didn't make it.
From MYF Mike Schmied with Doris and Yasmine came in a 172RG; Bret Strain in a Cherokee 180; and Jim Newport and me in a C337.
The weather was VFR in the San Diego area, but not as clear as we'd like to have it for a Fly-In and we did have to fly through some "misty stuff" on the way out. Once on top of the haze, there were no clouds, but the visibility was 15-20. However, a solid cloud deck covered most of the LA Basin all the way down to French Valley. Once over the hills north of the LA Basin, visibility increased to 25-30 miles.
The restaurant at APV left a lot to be desired. The orders came in slow and some were cold. Doris didn't order it, but she got a "special diet" sandwich. It was a regular sandwich with the usual meat in the center, but NOTHING else and she had to ask for some mayo. She got some half way through her sandwich. Gretton who came in 10-15 behind us, was the last guy to order an omelet, but was the 1st to get his order. Go figure. The other omelets were okay, but nothing to write home about. The only excuse I can give the restaurant is that it is very small with 6-8 tables and there is only one cook and one waitress. 'Nuff said on that.
During our hangar flying over breakfast we decided that the next Fly-In will be to Chiriaco Summit (L77) on Sun, Nov 14th. The day before, they're celebrating General Patton's birthday, but the General Patton Museum said there may not be nothing going on the following day when we plan on being there. I'll keep checking on it. If there is something planned for the day we're going there, it may be like flying into suicide alley. We'll avoid it and make Calexico (CXL) our alternate. I'll keep you posted.
Around noon everyone scattered back home. The visibility decreased to 10-15 miles over the LA Basin and the same in the San Diego area, but we didn't encounter any other real weather.
Oh Boy, we are going to get chastised by our Webmaster, Chris Claborne. We didn't take any pictures for the website. http://tonytex.com/ We'll blame it on Bret Strain who forgot to bring his camera.
Best of clear skies and tailwinds,
Tony Tex
