Hi Guys,

The Fly-In to Cable (CCB) on Jan 21st didn't work out as planned for
eleven people in five planes. The weather, specifically the wind, caused us
to cancel the flight while en route to CCB and fly to an alternate.

Flying from SEE were Jeff Cary, Jerry Jackson & Alberto in a 172.

Flying from MYF were: Chris Maier & Amos Jessup in a 172RG; Mike Schmied &
daughter Yasmine in a C177RG; Gary Ghio & Jason in a Piper Arrow; and Chris
Claborne & Tony Tex in a 172.

Early in the AM, the forecast called for calm winds in the San Diego area,
but the winds would be kicking up in the Ontario area about 2:00-3:00.
WRONG. The forecast may have changed about the time we left.

Jeff Cary was leading the pack and called Chris & Tony saying turbulence
was beating him up over CCB and he was diverting to F70. When Chris & Tony
were over El Toro, we listened to Ontario and Brackett ATIS. Sure enough,
both airports were having 20-25 knot winds with gusts to 40-45.

That was enough for us. We too diverted to F70 and info-ed to the rest of
the Group on 123.45 we were scrubbing the CCB flight and flying to F70.
Unfortunately not everyone was listening on the freq at the time. So we
asked SoCal to info others flying to CCB where we were going. One plane who
didn't hear us, but did get ONT ATIS, turned back to MYF. But things turned
out OK. Nine people in four planes meet at F70 where the winds were calm
with a cool 58 degrees and had breakfast.

Mike Schmied took a few pictures at breakfast and Chris Claborne, our
webmaster, will post them on our website. We did the usual "I was inverted
on short final" hangar flying and had a great time. Chris showed us a large
2007 calendar he made up with many pictures of us guys at breakfast and with
our planes at past Fly-Ins on the front page and on each month for the year.
It's really a nice piece of work. It took a lot of time and effort on his
part. If you'd like one, email Chris, or call 619-417-6879. Or you can see
one of the calendars at the next Fly-In. What's the charge for our Group's
Fly-In calendar? He said it might cost you a breakfast at the next Fly-In.

Next Fly-In is on Feb 18th to a warmer place... Calexico (CXL). Mark your
calendar and get a plane ready to go.

Best of clear skies and tailwinds,

Tony Tex
